Having a “healthy” kitchen starts with healthy shopping. Here are some tips for managing your trip to the grocery store.
1. Make a list and buy only those items on your list. Plan before you leave the house. If you’re eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, you will need 35 servings per week for you alone!
2. Go to the store after you have eaten. You will make better choices if you are not hungry when you start out.
3. Do spend most of your time in the outer edge of the store. All grocery stores are set up the same. The outer edge of the store is where all the healthy foods are: fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat.
4. Give yourself a time limit for going up and down the middle aisles. If you do not have anything on your list for that aisle, skip it.
5. Only buy items that have less than five to seven ingredients listed on the label. This is one way to limit the processed food that you eat.
6. Avoid items that have high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup listed on the label. High fructose corn syrup is a significant enemy of healthy eating (next months email topic!). Buy only diet soda.
7. Buy nothing at the checkout line. All those items are for impulse shoppers!
